Crappie Masters All American Tournament Trail held a national qualifier, February 28, 2015 on Lake Marion, Manning, South Carolina. Sponsored by Bass Pro Shops, Tracker Marine and Nitro Boats, Humminbird, Minn Kota, and the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce, the tournament will qualify anglers for the 2015 National Championship to be held on Kentucky Lake, Paris, Tennessee.
Manning, SC and Lake Marion threw all it had this week at the twenty-two teams that braved the cold and brutal conditions to make way for a first time winner. Pre-fishing was tough with reports of teams fishing for days without catching due to water temperatures dropping as much as ten degrees during the week. Lake Marion is known for large crappie and potential record setting stringers, but instead, chose to challenge the talented field of crappie anglers.
Matthew Outlaw and Wesley Phibbs came out on top with a seven fish limit weighing 13.68 pounds to win their first Crappie Masters event. Outlaw and Phibbs stated that the fishing was the toughest they have ever seen but being patient was the key for their victory after only landing eleven crappie during the eight and a half hour grind. The team spider rigged with BnM Poles in 6 foot waters from a Nitro Z-8 boat powered by Mercury Motors, Minn Kota Trolling Motor, and Humminbird electronics, catching their fish throughout all depths of the water column on MidSouth white/chartreuse tube jigs on ¼ ounce orange Rockport Rattler jigheads. Outlaw and Phibbs are sponsored by Lucas Oil, Hydro Force Marine, BnM Poles, Rockport Rattler, Mid South, and Driftmaster. They took home a total of $2382.00 which included a $250.00 bonus, donated by the Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol, for using E10 gasoline in their 225 HP Mercury Motor.
Second place went to the team of Tommy Vaughn and Gordon Turner with a weight of 11.78 pounds. The team spiderrigged in 6 foot of water and were catching their crappie from 3.5 to 5 foot deep on jigs. Vaughn and Turner received a check for $1000.00.
Coming in third place with a weight of 11.71 pounds, the Rockport Rattler team of Whitey Outlaw and Mike Parrott. The 2014 Angler Team of the Year spider rigged with 16 foot BnM Poles in 3-4 foot of water, catching their fish just off the bottom. The team stated they caught their crappie using Mid South white/chartreuse tube jigs on silver Rockport Rattler ¼ ounce jigheads with the Rockport Rattlers being the key to catching the slow to bite fish. Outlaw and Parrott are sponsored by Rockport Rattler, BnM Poles, Driftmaster, Humminbird, Minn Kota, TTI Blakemore, Vicious, and Mid South tube jigs.
Big Fish winners were the team of Ellis and Jon Cannon with a beautiful black crappie weighing 2.49 pounds. They received a check for $308.00.
Top Male/Female team went to Joey and Terry Hilton with a weight of 6.47 pounds. They received a $100.00 Bass Pro Shops gift card.
