Local Team Vic Finkley and Kim Gray are Mississippi State Champions

Grenada, Mississippi was the host of the Rockport Rattler Mississippi State Championship on Grenada Lake this past week. Warm temperatures and hot pre-fishing days were setting up a new run at record weights again on the World’s number one rated crappie fishing lake, but again Mother Nature said hold on. A major cold front passed through on Thursday night which brought high winds and cold temperatures in for the tournament days along with a little sleet and snow at times. However, this did not stop the 108 boat field from delivering the impressive weights you are used to seeing on Grenada Lake.

The hometown team of Vic Finkley and Kim Gray took the day one lead with an impressive weight of 18.75 pounds and followed that up with a day two total of 15.80 pounds for a combined weight of 34.55 pounds and earned the title of Mississippi State Champions. The team stated they were fishing in a creek channel in 8-12 foot of water that was bordered by water covered grass and weeds, catching the staging females just two foot deep under the surface. Finkley and Gray were spider rigging with their BnM Poles baited up with Midsouth Black and Chartreuse tube jigs while using a Minn Kota trolling motor and Humminbird Electronics. The win earned the Midsouth Tackle sponsored team $7000.00 which included a $500.00 bonus donated by the Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol for using E10 gasoline in their outboard motor and a $100.00 Bass Pro Shops gift card for the top Male/Female Team.

The defending champions and Ozark Rod Team, David Cox and Steve Hockett, climbed way up the leader board on day two and finished in second place with a total weight of 34.33 pounds. Cox and Hockett were double jig spider rigging from a Ranger boat with Humminbird Electronics and a Minn Kota Trolling Motor in 7-8 foot of water, catching their crappie 5 foot deep using 16’ Ozark Rods and black and chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows. David and Steve are sponsored by Ozark Rods and Angler’s Port Marine and took home a check for $3500.00.

Kyle Schoenherr and Rodney Neuhaus finished in third place with a two day total of 34.15 pounds. The Road Runner and Tru Turn Hooks Team also was spider rigging with BnM Poles from their Ranger boat in 1-5 foot of water catching their crappie anywhere from 6-16 inches deep off of their Road Runner Pro Series 2.0 1/8 oz. jig heads with Muddy Water and Midsouth jigs, lime and chartreuse glow, tied on with Stren line. Schoenherr and Neuhaus are sponsored by Road Runner, Tru Turn Hooks, BnM Poles, Lowrance, Muddy Water Baits, Midsouth Tackle, Harvest Clean, and Tite-Lok. They earned a check for $2500.00.

Big Fish resulted in a tie between the teams of Monty Blount and Keith Sullivan, and James and Jamie Heflin with a slab weighing 3.36 pounds, which earned each team a check for $1080.00.

Top finishing Adult/Youth Team went to the Iowa father and son team of Aaron and Dylan Clark with a total weight of 6.18 pounds. They took home a new Minn Kota Trolling Motor.
