First Timers Win The Stren Tennessee State Championship

Kentucky Lake, Paris, TN, was the site for this weekends two day national qualifying event and host of the Stren Tennessee State Championship. Anglers were facing post spawn conditions and drastic falls in lake elevation throughout the week, but were blessed with beautiful weather and light winds for the competition. Another exciting weigh in took place at Buchanan's Resort in front of a crowd of 500 where champions were crowned.

The father and son team of Robert and Dewayne McCord, first time Crappie Masters participants, won the Stren Tennessee State Championship on Kentucky Lake with a two day total, 14 fish limit, of 24.77 pounds. The McCord duo were pulling a combination of jigs and crank baits along channel ledges with BnM Poles strung with Stren Crappie Mono in 25-31 foot of water while catching their crappie 12-14' deep during both days of competition. The team was fishing from a Ranger boat equipped with a Mercury Motor, Minn Kota Trolling Motor, and Humminbird Electronics. The win earned the McMords a check for $6900.00, which included a $500.00 bonus, donated by the Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol, for using E10 gasoline in their boat. Their sponsors include Cumberland Crappie, Crappie Reaper, and Southern Pro.

Bruce Christian and Dan Hudgens finished in the runner up position with a two day total weight of 24.69 pounds. Christian and Hudgens also were pulling crankbaits from a Ranger boat, equipped with a Minn Kota Trolling Motor and Humminbird Electronics, in 15-30 foot of water and caught their crappie anywhere from 7-17' deep with a combination of BnM and Bass Pro Poles strung with Stren Hi-Vis Crappie Mono. The Strike King and River West sponsored team took home a check for $3200.00.

Third place, with 24.17 pounds, went to the day one leaders, Tony and Randall Hughes, who are sponsored by Rod Safe, Grizzly Jig Company, and Strike King. The Hughes' were spider rigging in 10-12 foot of water, catching their crappie just off the bottom on blue/chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows. The team uses a combination of electronics which includes a Humminbird depth finder and a Minn Kota Trolling Motor. Tony and Randall earned a $2500.00 check for their efforts.

Big Fish of the tournament honors went to the Male/Female Team of Paul and Elizabeth Turner with  a Kentucky Lake 2.45 pound monster. This one crappie was worth a check for $1218.00.

Top Male/Female Team went to Ronnie and Kelly Capps with two day total of 21.38 pounds. The Capps' took home a $100.00 Bass Pro Shops gift card and a $350.00 check for finishing in 17th place.

Mark and Olivia Arnold won the Adult/Youth division after posting an impressive weight of 19.90 pounds, 30th overall. A Minn Kota Trolling Motor was presented to the Arnolds for their efforts.
