Robert And Todd Dent Win The Ozark Rods Open On Rend Lake

Lake Cove Resort and Lake Zone Bait and Tackle hosted the Ozark Rods Open on Rend Lake Saturday, May 16, for a one day national qualifying Crappie Masters event. Mother Nature again played a role on tournament day for the anglers, but did not stop a huge crowd from coming out to cheer on the competitors. After the 54 team field, from thirteen different states, made their way through the scales, another local team was left standing on top.

Robert and Todd Dent weighed in a seven fish limit of 9.87 pounds to take the top spot and were crowned the Ozark Rods Open Champions. The Dents were one pole fishing in 6.5’ of water over submerged brush piles, catching their crappie just off the bottom with their home made Papa Dent black and white jigs on Ozark Rods. Electronics were a major player in their success thanks to Humminbird Electronics and a Minn Kota trolling motor. The Dents are sponsored by The Golf Cart Guys and took home a check for $4992.00 which included a $250.00 bonus, donated by the Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol, for using E10 gasoline in their boat motor and $742.00 for big fish of the tournament honors with a 1.74 pound crappie.

Rend Lake Fishing Guides, Nick and Bob Shafer, finished in second place with an impressive weight of 9.46 pounds. The Shafers were one pole fishing in the buck brush using Ozark Rods baited with a combination of jigs and minnows in 1-3 foot of water. Their boat was also equipped with a Minn Kota trolling motor and Humminbird Electronics. Nick and Bob Shafer are sponsored by Lake Zone Bait and Tackle and Ozark Rods. They took home a check for $2000.00.

Third place went to the Missouri Team of Charlie and Kevin Rogers with a weight of 9.35 pounds. The Rogers’ were spider rigging with 16’ Ozark Rods with Stren line in 5-7 foot of water, catching crappie 3’ deep on 3” Bobby Garland Slab Slayer jigs. Their boat is equipped with a Mercury Motor, Humminbird Electronics, and a Minn Kota trolling motor. Charlie and Kevin are sponsored by Ozark Rods, Tite-Lok, Bobby Garland, Mercury Motors, Zeko Shoes, Midwest Marine, and Power Pole. Their finish earned them a check for $1000.00.

Top finishing Male/Female Team went to Vic Finkley and Kim Gray, of Grenada, MS, with a seven fish limit of 7.93 pounds. They earned a $100.00 Bass Pro Shops gift card for their finish.

Top Adult/Youth Team went to Chris and Cameron Younger, from Tennessee, with 6.42 pounds. They also took home a $100.00 Bass Pro Shops gift card.
