Kyle Schoenherr and Rodney Neuhaus Are 2015 Crappie Masters National Champions

The 2015 Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters National Championship on Kentucky Lake is in the books and what an exciting finish it turned out to be! Championship Saturday brought a weather change, which dramatically hurt or helped the anglers. What had been stable weather conditions took a 180 degree turn with teams battling not only each other but wind, fog, and rain showers thru much of the day which resulted in a shake up of the field when the weigh in was completed. The top 10 from day 1 of the tournament weighed in last, which always brings excitement to see who sets in the Crappie Masters hot seat last. Taking the hot seat first was the team of Brently Smith and Elliott Dowdy who stayed there long enough to eventually finish 4th for the championship. They were knocked out of the hot seats by the team of Dwayne Craig and Johnny Clary who wound up the tournament in 3rd place along with the 2nd big fish of the tournament, a huge 2.76 slab. Their stay was short lived as best friends Harold Maddux and Brian Oldham weighed in two teams later to total 22.36 pounds, which gave them the right to be in the hot seats. That lasted literally seconds as the Roadrunner team of Kyle Schoenherr and Rodney Neuhaus were next in line after weighing 11.61 on day one putting them in third place, stepped up to the scale with an impressive 12.01 pounds to take a 1.32 pound lead over Maddux and Oldham. Schoenherr and Neuhaus have been close to winning a Crappie Masters National Championship before with a second and two third place finishes on their resume. However there were two teams yet to weigh their fish, the second place team of Damon Thompson and Dan Porter, and the day one leaders, the Missouri Corn Growers Association, American Ethanol team of Kevin Jones Jr. and Billy Don Surface who stunned the crowd and the competition with an incredible 13.01 pounds to take a nearly pound and a half lead going into Championship Saturday. As fate would have it, the team most affected by the weather change was Jones and Surface as the wind would not allow them to stay on top of the structure they were fishing to get the same bite as day one. The day one second place team dealt with much more boat traffic on day two which did not allow them to fish the stake beds they did on day one before others teams had and also could not match their day one weight. That opened the door for Schoenherr and Neuhaus to finally claim their first Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters National Championship with a two day total weight of 23.68 pounds giving them a 1.32 pound margin of victory and the $30,000 first place check to go with it. Schoenherr and Neuhaus also collected an additional $2,000 Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol bonus for using E10 fuel in their boat.  The $10,000 second place check went to the team of Harold Maddux and Brian Oldham with a 2-day weight of 22.36 pounds along with a $500 bonus from Stren for being the highest placing team using Stren line. Third place went to the team of Dwayne Craig and Johnny Clary with a weight of 21.63 pounds and a $5,000 check, and a $250 Johnson Fishing bonus for using their products in the tournament. Craig and Clary also had second big fish of the tournament weighing 2.76 pounds, which paid them an additional $900. Fourth place went to the team of Brently Smith and Elliott Dowdy who weighed in 21.33 pounds, and rounding out the top five of the National Championship was the team in second place after day one, Damon Thompson and Dan Porter who wound up with 21.25 pounds over the two days. Big fish of the tournament was weighed in on day one, a huge 2.78 slab brought to the scale by the team of John Eubanks and Shane Moore. They collected $2,100 for the fish along with a $500 bonus from Johnson Fishing for using their products, $500 from Stren for fishing with their line, and two new pair of Zeko shoes.
