Lake Greenwood, Greenwood, SC, hosted the two day South Carolina State Championship on Friday and Saturday, March 4th & 5th. The lake has been rising and falling the past few weeks, making the bite toughen up on the competitors with muddy water and scattered fish. As always, someone has to figure out a winning pattern and that they did.
Mike Huffstetler and Ray Koon, both from South Carolina, claimed the South Carolina State Championship title with a two day combined weight of 23.74 pounds. The team stated they were long line trolling in 18 to 30 foot of water, catching their fish 5 foot deep on Slider jigs, mainly Junebug, at speeds of 1.2 to 1.4 mph. Huffstetler and Koon won $4000.00 for their efforts which included a $500.00 bonus, donated by the Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol for using E10 gasoline in their boat.
Second place went to the day one leaders, Kevin Hawkins and Ben McGuirt, with 23.05 pounds. Hawkins and McGuirt were also long line trolling in 15-35 foot of water while catching their fish around the three foot mark with a wide variety of color combinations. The team took home a check for $2050.00 which included a $350.00 for big crappie of the tournament at 2.38 pounds.
David and Lisa Kingsmore finished out the top three by posting a two day weight of 21.73 pounds. The husband and wife team were spider rigging in 8-20 foot of water while adjusting their depths each day for the changing conditions with the Bobby Garland Watermelon Wine being the top producing color. The Kingsmores received a check for $1150.00 along with taking home a Navionics Platinum chip and a $100.00 Bass Pro Shops Gift Card for being the highest finishing Male/Female Team in the tournament.
Highest finishing Adult/Youth Team went to Jim Hood and Christian Gorth. They received a brand new Minn Kota trolling motor and a $100.00 Everharts Sporting Goods Gift Card for their efforts.
