Prattville, AL welcomed 60 anglers from nine different states for the Alabama State Championship to compete on the big fish waters of the Alabama River and Lake Jordan. Anglers were in attendance for a Meet the Pros night at the Bass Pro Shops in Prattville and for a Media and VIP fish off that preceded the Championship. Pre fishing conditions were reported as great with warm weather and sunshine for most of the week. After the final weigh in on Championship Saturday, several large Alabama slabs were weighed and a first time winner emerged.
The Johnson Fishing Team of Billy and Scott Williams, Georgia, weighed in a two day total of 24.37 pounds to win their first Crappie Masters event and were crowned the 2016 Alabama State Champions. The father and son team were long line trolling with a combination of 10,12, and 16 foot BnM Trolling Poles, Stren line, and Johnson Shad Tube jigs, mostly in blue and chartreuse while catching their crappie in 12-20 foot of water, 8-10 foot down. Team Williams fish from a Ranger boat equipped with a Minn Kota trolling motor and Humminbird electronics. They took home a check for $4500.00 which included a $500.00 bonus, donated by the Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol, for using E10 gasoline in their boat and are sponsored by Johnson Fishing, BnM Poles, Humminbird, Minn Kota, Driftmaster, and K2 Coolers.
Dan Dannenmueller, Alabama, and Garrett Steele, Tennessee, finished in
second place with 22.74 pounds. The Bobby Garland Team was spider rigging in 15 foot of water with 16’ BnM BGJP Poles, catching their crappie 10-12 foot deep on a combination of Bobby Garland Ice Out jigs and Tru Turn hooks with minnows. They took home a check for $2000.00.
Third place and winners of $1100.00, the Road Runner and Tru Turn Hooks Team of Kyle Schoenherr and Rodney Neuhaus, Illinois, with 22.37 pounds. Schoenherr and Neuhaus were spider rigging in 12-16 foot of water with 16’ BnM BGJP Poles and catching their fish just off of the bottom on double Tru Turn Hook minnow rigs. The reigning National Champions are sponsored by Road Runner, Tru Turn Hooks, Tite-Lok, BnM Poles, Muddy Water Baits, Harvest Clean, Gamma, and Lowrance.
Fourth place and winners of $800.00 was Steve Brown and Gerald
Overstreet, Alabama, with 22.29 pounds.
Fifth place and winner of $600.00 with a total of 22.23 pounds, Tony Thomas, Alabama.
Big Crappie of the Tournament was caught by the 15th place team of Jimmy Ayers and Michael Clinard, Tennessee, weighing 2.35 pounds. This crappie was worth $420.00.
Male/Female division winners were Bob and Lizabeth Robinson, Arkansas, with 21.11 pounds. They took home a Navionics Platinum chip and a $100.00 Bass Pro Shops gift card. The Robinsons also finished 8th overall and won a set of Tite-Lok rod holders.
Dewayne Scott and Bryant Golson, Alabama, won the Adult/Youth division with 13.94 pounds and took home a Minn Kota trolling motor and a $100.00 Everharts Sporting Goods gift card.
