Crappie Masters moved into Southern Illinois this week on Rend Lake for a one day national qualifier hosted by Ozark Rods. Sixty six teams from eight different states came to compete for the $16,000.00 purse. High winds left anglers scrambling to find fishable waters during pre-fishing and during the tournament. As always, someone finds them and puts together a winning combination.
Robert and Todd Dent, Illinois, came back to defend their title and win for the second straight year with a seven crappie limit weighing 10.56 pounds. The Dents were one pole fishing with 12’ Ozark Rods in the buck brush with their own hand tied Papa Dent black and white jigs. “Pre fishing was the key to our win. Knowing exactly which bushes to fish so we weren’t wasting any time” stated Robert Dent. The Dents, sponsored by Ozark Rods, took home a check for $4250.00 which included a $250.00 bonus, donated by the Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol, for using E10 gasoline in their boat and a combo set of Ozark Rods.
Bob and Nick Shafer, Illinois, finished in second place with 9.93 pounds and
received a check for $2000.00. The Shafers were also one pole fishing with Ozark Rods in the buck brush, catching their crappie on Lake Fork chartreuse glow jigs. They are sponsored by Rend Lake Fishing Guides, River to River Outfitters and Ozark Rods.
Third place and a check for $1300.00 went to Jason Dudley, Illinois, and Zach Pierce, Missouri, with 9.18 pounds. Dudley and Pierce were one pole fishing in buck brush from their Nitro boat, powered by a Mercury Motor, Minn Kota trolling motor, and Humminbird electronics. Stren line and black and white Midsouth tube jigs were used to catch their fish in 18” of water. The team is sponsored by Midsouth Tackle, Zeko Shoes, Muddy Water Baits, Engel, and ACC Crappie Stix.
Fourth place with 9.13 pounds went to the Tennessee team of Paul and
Elizabeth Turner. They received a check for $1100.00.
Kyle Schoenherr and Rodney Neuhaus, Illinois, finished in fifth with 8.97 pounds and took home a check for $900.00.
Big Crappie of the Tournament was weighed in by Tony and Jonathan Sheridan at 1.97 pounds. This crappie was good for a $924.00 check, two pairs of Zeko Shoes, and a set of 10’ Ozark Rods.
Mike and Daniel Melton won the Adult/Youth division and finished 8th place overall with 8.40 pounds. The Meltons won a $100.00 Bass Pro Shops gift card, a $100.00 Everharts Sporting Goods gift card, and $600.00 cash.
Male/Female division winners were Vic Finkley and Kim Gray with 8.95 pounds. They won a $100.00 Bass Pro Shops gift card and $800.00 for finishing 6th place in the tournament.
