Smith and Dowdy Become The Kentucky/Tennessee State Champions

Crappie Masters teamed up with the Kentucky Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol for the 2016 Kentucky/Tennessee State Championship on Kentucky and Barkley Lakes. Sixty nine teams from ten different states took part in this two day total weight tournament that stretched out well over two thousand miles of shoreline. Cold fronts, rain, and heavy winds were heavy factors in the outcome with several teams struggling to find productive fishable waters. In the end, one team stood tall and took home the hardware and thousands in prize money. 

kentucky1st Smith and Elliot Dowdy weighed in a two day total of 24.29 pounds to become first time winners and the 2016 Kentucky/Tennessee State Champions. Smith and Dowdy were spider rigging in 7-13 foot of water, catching their crappie around 6-9 foot deep on white/chartreuse Midsouth Tackle tube jigs. Their equipment list included BnM Poles, Stren line, and a Minn Kota trolling motor. The Champions took home a check for $6914.00 which included a $500.00 bonus, donated by the Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol, for using E10 gasoline in their boat plus a check for $414.00 for catching the second big crappie of the tournament at 2.42 pounds and two 10’ Jenko HyperSense rods. Smith and Dowdy are sponsored by Cannon Packaging.

Tim Ridley and Chuck Sisson finished in the second spot with 23.69 pounds  kentucky2nd and received a check for $3000.00 plus a 10’ Jenko HyperSense rod. Ridley and Sisson were spider rigging in 12-15 foot of water, using white and chartreuse Bobby Garland jigs and minnows, catching their fish 2 feet off of the bottom. BnM Poles, Humminbird electronics, and a Minn Kota trolling motor were on their equipment list. 

kentucky3rd Tite-Lok fishing team of Wade Hendren and Roy Logan finished third with 23.16 pounds. The 2010 National Champs were spider rigging in 12-13 foot of water with 14’ BnM BGJP Poles, catching their crappie just off the bottom with double minnow rigs. Hendren and Logan fish from a Ranger boat, equipped with Humminbird electronics and a Minn Kota trolling motor. They are sponsored by Tite-Lok, BnM Poles, Midsouth Tackle, Road Runner, and Simpson Jigs and took home a check for $2100.00 plus a 10’ Jenko HyperSense rod. 

Fourth place with 22.64 pounds went to Richard and George Hughes. They received a check for $1600.00. kentuckymf

Leonard and Joni Barnett finished in fifth place with 22.53 pounds and received a check for $1400.00. The Barnett’s were also the top finishing Male/Female team and won a Navionics Platinum chip, a $100.00 Bass Pro Shops gift card and a 10’ HyperSense rod. 

kentuckyay Mark and Olivia Arnold won the Adult/Youth division and finished in seventh place overall with a two day total of 22.05 pounds. The Arnold’s won a new Minn Kota trolling motor, a $100.00 Everhart’s Sporting Goods gift card, and a check for $1000.00. 

Big Crappie of the Tournament weighed 2.44 pounds and was caught by the team of David Butler and Jimmy Riley. This one crappie was worth $966.00 and two pairs of Zeko Shoes plus the team won an additional $900.00 for finishing in eighth place.
