Shoemake And Cappel Claim Hard Earned Victory At Ozark Rods Open At Rend Lake

For one of the few times in 2018, weather did not play a factor for the 64 teams that took part in the Crappie Masters sponsored by The Renewable Fuels Association “Ethanol Fueled With Pride”, American Ethanol, and Bass Pro Shops Rend Lake Ozark Rods National Qualifier May 5th at Whittington, Illinois. Light winds and warm temperatures greeted the teams, the one thing that didn’t cooperate was the big female bite. Teams found and caught large numbers of fish with many reporting boating over 100 fish, but struggled to find the larger spawning females. At the end of the day, the Muddy Water Baits team of Jesse Shoemake and Shane Cappel separated themselves from a stellar field bringing in 7 fish that topped the scale at 9.31 pounds, just outdistancing the hard charging Paul Turner who settled for a second place finish for the second week in a row. Shoemake and Cappel spider rigged B’n’M BGJP Rods in 8 to 10 feet of water with Muddy Water Baits tipped with minnows catching fish in the 7 foot range.  With Mercury power and MinnKota Trolling Motor, the team was able to stay on an area that produced quality fish in the past. Shoemake and Cappel took home the $4,000.00 winners check plus the $250.00 Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol bonus for using E10 fuel, an additional $100.00 Jenko Fishing Bonus using their minnow dipper, plus the $250.00 Power Pole Captains Cash Program bonus for winning the tournament. Shoemake and Cappel are sponsored by Muddy Water Baits, K-2 Koolers, and Perotti Bilt Rod Holders.

For the third time in 2018 it was close but no cigar for the outstanding team of Paul and Elizabeth Turner who weighed 7 fish totaling 9.05 pounds putting them in runner up position good for a $2,000.00 check, and start to put a nail in the 2018 Crappie Masters Angler Team of the Year race that eluded them in 2017 after a strong start. Paul fishing by himself was limited to fishing only 3 Poles by state regulations, plus did not have the opportunity to pre-fish. As he said, “I put the poles down and just went fishing”. It worked out as Paul was spider rigging B’n’M Poles in 7 and a half to 11 feet of water catch quality fish near the bottom using a pink/chartreuse jig.  Paul also used Humminbird Electronics and a MinnKota Trolling Motor to locate and stay on the proper speed to trigger the bite. Paul and Elizabeth Turner are sponsored by B’n’M Poles, Crappieholic, and Strike King Lure Company.

Third place went to the local team of Sean Drury and JP Onhiser who consider Rend as one of their home lakes, brought 7 fish to the scale weighing 8.99 pounds good for the $1,200.00 third place check.  Drury and Onhiser made the necessary adjustments during the day that catapulted them from what looked like a disappointing day to their third place finish.  Drury and Onhiser caught their fish spider rigging Muddy Water Glow Baits tipped with a minnow in 3 to 10 feet of water catching better fish halfway down in the water column. The team credited Humminbird 360 Electronics and MinnKota Trolling Motor for their finish.  Drury and Onhiser are sponsored by ACC Crappie Stix, Muddy Water Baits, and I’ll be Jigged.

Fourth place and top placing Male/Female went to The Green Machine Team of Jackie and Holly Linton who weighed in 8.94 pounds. The Linton’s received a check for $1,000.00 and a Humminbird Helix 5 for their efforts.

Glenn Clayton and Tony Rost rounded out the top five with a weight of 8.72. Clayton and Rost earned a check worth $900.00.

Big fish of the tournament was brought in by the team of David Townsend and Dan Johnston that weighed a dandy 1.90 pounds, and was the first fish of the day they boated. The fish was worth $896.00.

Top Adult/Youth Team was Joe and Clayton Whyers who won a $100.00 Everharts Outdoor Store Gift Card.
