Morrow And Maupin Make It A Clean Sweep At Truman Season Finale

Emotions were high with titles, big money, and a very special benefit all coming together Saturday, August 18 at the Crappie Masters sponsored by The Renewable Fuels Association “Ethanol Fueled With Pride”, American Ethanol, and Bass Pro Shops Final Truman Lake Qualifier and Final leg of the Missouri State Championship sponsored by The Clinton Chamber of Commerce along with On The Side Catering, and The Clinton Police Fallen Officers Benefit Tournament in honor of Gary Michael and Ryan Morton raising funds for needed equipment to help save officers lives.

With stable and summer like weather the 118 boats plus the boats fishing the amateur benefit tournament hit the Truman Lake waters with high aspirations and expectations only to find for many the bite had changed a bit from pre-fishing and fish had become scattered and hard to find and pattern bigger fish. The higher finishing teams were patient, however did have to keep moving as in many cases reports of finding one quality fish on a tree were common through the field. The one thing that stayed consistent as it has both Truman Tournaments were the names at the top of the leaderboard, Barry Morrow and Chad Maupin who swept both official points tournaments giving them what many would call a historic and dream season as they brought 7 fish to the scale weighing 10.54 pounds narrowly eclipsing the Alabama Team of Wade McDonald and Eric Cagle by only .01 of a pound as McDonald and Cagle weighed 10.53 pounds. With the victory Saturday, a win on Lake of the Ozark in April and a top ten at Mark Twain Lake, secured not only The Missouri State Championship but also the coveted Crappie Masters Angler Team of the Year honors overtaking Paul and Elizabeth Turner on the final day. Earlier in the year Morrow and Maupin also became Mississippi State Champions. On tournament day Morrow stated he had predetermined 7 areas he wanted to fish if needed, but a tough and sporadic bite and numbers kept moving until they found a spot that did hold quality fish and made the winning decision to make or break there. That decision rewarded them handsomely. The team single or double-poled jigs in less than 10 feet of water catching fish near the bottom. Morrow and Maupin had their second $10,000.00 tournament day of the season taking home $6,000.00 for the victory along with the $250.00 Missouri Corn Growers Association/American Ethanol bonus for using E10 fuel, a $100.00 Jenko Fishing bonus, and the Power Pole Captains Cash bonus of $250.00! That’s not all! For winning the 2018 Crappie Masters Missouri State Championship the team won $2,100.00, plus participating in the Clinton Police Fallen Officers Benefit Tournament as the top finishing Pro Team, Morrow and Maupin collected an additional $1,600.00 making their total for the day a whopping $10,300.00! What a day! Barry Morrow and Chad Maupin are sponsored by Electra Heating and Air Conditioning, Beaver Bottom Baits, Puddle Jumpers, Bobby Garland Crappie Baits, Everharts Outdoor Store, Stump Jumper, Off Shore Tackle, Performance Fiberglass, Power Crappie, and Huckabee Rods.

Heartbreaking but also rewarding was the day for the runner up Alabama team of Wade McDonald and Eric Cagle who came within an eyelash of victory weighing in 7 fish topping the scales at 10.53 pounds securing the $3,000.00 second place check. The team was also in a dead heat in the B’n’M Rookie Team of the Year race and decided to make the 12 hour drive to see if they could seal the deal on Truman which they did going away which will bring them not only the title but a check for $3,000.00 presented at the National Championship. McDonald and Cagle chose to spider rig Jigs and minnows in less than 10 feet of water on flats catching their fish also near bottom. Wade McDonald and Eric Cagle are sponsored by HH Rods and Reels, and Pahtzke Bait.

The familiar team of Charlie and Travis Bunting finished in the 3rd place slot weighing 9.87 pounds on 7 fish taking home $1,700.00 in the process. The Buntings also spider rigged, but unlike most teams in just two and a half to 5 feet of water finding shallow quality fish on a flat. Travis stated he preferred not to fish over 6 feet of water when possible and that decision worked on tournament day. The Buntings also used their standard jig and minnow combination for another outstanding finish. Charlie and Travis Bunting are sponsored by Power Pole, B’n’M Poles, Balzout, Off Shore Tackle, Muddy Water Baits and Jigs, Dub-L-Seat, Missouri Goldfish Hatchery, Pro’s Choice Marine, Humminbird, MinnKota, Ranger Boats, Mercury Motors, and Engel Coolers.

In fourth place was the team of Bo Shepard and Chris Dudgeon with a weight of 9.82 pounds. Shepard and Dudgeon received a check for $1,400.00.

Rounding out the top 5 was the team of Kevin Pitts and Travis Mace. Pitts and Mace weighed in 7 fish with a weight of 9.81 pounds and earned a check worth $1,200.00 for their efforts.

Big Fish of the tournament was also separated by just .01 hundredths as Mark and Aaron Engelhart brought in a 1.95 pounder squeaking out the 1.94 pounder weighed in by Lamar Bunting and Greg London. The Engelharts said that was the first fish of the day and was valuable as they won the $1,638.00 prize.

The top Adult/Youth Team and a $100.00 Everharts Outdoor Store gift card went to the 11th place Team of TJ and Alex Palmer who weighed in 9.38 pounds.

Top Male/Female Award Honors went to Jason Meacham and Colleen Stanton finishing in 15th place weighing in 8.96 pounds, good enough to win a Humminbird Helix 5.
