It Was A Turner For The Better At Grenada

Sometimes pre-fishing gives you great information going into a national tournament and sometimes leaves you scratching your head and scrambling.  One thing is for sure it’s not always indicative of tournament success. Examples: Paul and Elizabeth Turner. Paul caught no more than 3 tournament fish per day, and those were good male crappie, but as can happen, things changed during tournament days and bigger females moved in to spawn on a flooded Grenada Lake and Paul and Elizabeth Turner took advantage going wire to wire winning the Crappie Masters sponsored by The Renewable Fuels Association, “Ethanol Fueled With Pride”, American Ethanol, and Bass Pro Shops Grenada Lake, Mississippi National Qualifier and Final Leg of the Mississippi State Championship hosted by the Grenada Tourism Commission along with Millennium Marine March 22nd and 23rd, with an impressive 2 day, 14 fish limit weighing 33.24 pounds taking home $6,200.00 for the victory, along with an additional $500.00 Missouri Corn Growers Association/American Ethanol bonus, $60.00 in Ardent bonus money for using Ardent Reels, and if that’s not enough, the Turners were the top placing Male/Female team winning a Humminbird Helix 5, and with the win garnered them the 2019 Crappie Masters Mississippi State Championship along with the $1,000.00 that goes with that honor. Paul and Elizabeth were fishing a flooded field spider rigging B’n’M Rods and orange and chartreuse Jigs in 4 foot of water catching fish 6 inches to 1 foot deep. Paul stated his Humminbird depth finder and Minn Kota Trolling Motor were critical in navigating areas that are normally dry. Paul said the key to victory was having Elizabeth in the boat who was back after recovering from the birth of the couples first child, to help with catching and netting the big Grenada slabs in shallow water. Paul and Elizabeth Turner are sponsored by B’n’M Poles, War Eagle Boats, Crappieholic, and Strike King Lure Company.

The runner up position was filled by the Oklahoma team of Robert Carlile and Craig Nichols who nearly gained their second Crappie Masters victory of the season weighing in 32.06 pounds over the two tournament days and walked away with a check for $3,100.00. Carlile and Nichols stuck to their preferred fishing technique and single poled purple and chartreuse custom hair Jigs in 15 foot of water targeting quality fish suspended 3 feet down with the help of their electronics, Minn Kota Trolling Motor, and Mercury Motor to make the critical moves needed to claim the second place position. Carlile and Nichols are sponsored by Huckabee Rods, Dunkin Jigs, and Lowrance.

Third place went to the current Crappie Masters Angler Team of the Year Barry Morrow and Chad Maupin with 31.84 pounds weighed in, good for a $2,000.00 check and a great bounce back from the previous tournament at Lake Washington where they experienced engine issues. Morrow and Maupin spider rigged B’n’M Poles in 12 feet of water, catching their fish 4 foot deep using 3 inch black and chartreuse, and orange and chartreuse Bobby Garland Slab Slay’Rs. The duo also credited their Humminbird and Minn Kota Combo as a key to their success. Morrow and Maupin are sponsored by Bobby Garland, Beaver Bottom Baits, Everharts Outdoor Store, Huckabee Rods, Crappietown Jigs, Stump Jumper, Off Shore Tackle, Puddle Jumpers, Electra Air, and Perotti Rod Holders.

Fourth place and $1,725.00 went to the team of David Harley and Don Rossman weighing in a solid 31.10 pounds.

Rounding out the top five was the team of Danny Darnall and Kevin Murphy who weighed 29.14 pounds good for a $1,450 check.

Big Fish went to the team of Wade Recker and Matt Mavigliano whose day one 2.98 dandy held up and awarded the team a check for $980.00.

The second place big fish money went to Robert Catron and Matt Hall whose 2.94 pounder got them $420.00 to take home.

A very touching story happened in the Adult/Youth category as the team of Brandon Fulgham and young Jake Hood whose father Bob passed away just a few months ago wanted to carry on his dad’s tradition of fishing on his home Grenada Lake waters. For his first Crappie Masters event, Jake and Brandon won a $100.00 Everharts Outdoor Store gift card and a Minn Kota Edge Trolling Motor outweighing others in the category weighing in an impressive 21.39 pounds.
