Grenada Lake played host to the 2016 Rockport Rattler Mississippi State Championship this past weekend, March 25 & 26, where 141 teams from 20 different states came to compete on the nation’s number one ranked crappie lake known as “home of the three pound crappie.” High winds forced anglers to limited fishable waters during the week for pre fishing, but the skies cleared, winds laid down, then the best crappie anglers in the world let Grenada shine.

The Ozark Rod team of David Cox and Steve Hockett, Missouri, weighed in 14 crappie over the two day championship for a combined weight of 35.05 pounds to claim the 2016 Mississippi State Championship, their second in three years. Cox and Hockett were spider rigging in 5-7 foot of water while catching their fish 5 foot deep with black and chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows on 16’ Ozark Trolling Rods. Cox stated the key to victory was moving from spot to spot and fishing the right water depths where other boats had not been so the fish were not spooked by boat traffic. The team took home a check for $9500.00 which included a check for $500.00 from the Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol for using E10 gasoline in their boat and a set of 16’ Jenko Fishing Trolling Rods. They are sponsored by Ozark Rods and Anglers Port Marine.

Earnie Cox and Rick Fajen, Missouri, finished in second place with a weight  of 33.62 pounds. Cox and Fajen were spider rigging in 5-6 foot of water, catching their crappie 4 foot deep on a large combination of jig colors on 16’ Ozark Trolling Rods. Their boat was equipped with a Mercury Motor and Minn Kota trolling motor. Cox and Fajen received a check for $4500.00 and a 10’ Hypertense Jenko Fishing Rod.

Third place went to the day 1 leaders, Jack and Holly Linton, Illinois, also known as “The Green Machine” with a total weight of 32.35 pounds. The Linton’s were spider rigging in 4-5 foot of water while catching their fish 2.5’ deep on Bass Pro Shops Rage Tail jigs in Black and chartreuse. They are sponsored by Phoenix Boats, Mercury Motors, K&J Chevrolet, Gates Custom Jigs, Lake Fork Trophy Lures, Rod Sox, ACC Crappie Stix, Do-It Molds, Brush Pile Jigs, and Boat Works. The team took home $4674.00 which included $1974.00 for catching the big crappie of the tournament at 3.57 pounds, a Navionics Platinum chip and a $100 Bass Pro Shops gift card for being the top placing Male/Female Team, and three 10’ Hypertense Jenko Fishing Rods for being the day 1 leader, top Male/Female team, and Big Fish winner.

Top placing Adult/Youth team went to Brandon Manis, Kansas, and Elijah

grenadaay Wooten, Alabama, with a two day total of 20.65 pounds. They took home a brand new Minn Kota trolling motor and a $100.00 Everharts Sporting Goods gift card.
