Hughes and Hughes win Talquin, Thiel and Willis claim Florida State Championship PDF Print

Lake Talquin and Gadsden County Tourist Development Council played host to the second leg of the Crappie Masters, Florida State Championship and two-day national qualifying tournament February 3rd and 4th, sponsored by The Renewable Fuels Association, American Ethanol, and Bass Pro Shops. Fifty-one teams from twelve states battled dense fog on day one and post cold front conditions on day two. Lake Talquin cemented itself as one of the top fisheries in the country with large weights being brought to the scale. Day one saw a familiar team in the lead as former Crappie Masters Angler Team of the Year Billy and Scott Williams weighed in an impressive 13.66 pounds. Day two saw the field change around as some teams struggled to duplicate day one weights. That was not the case for the team in ninth place, father and son team and eventual champions, Richard and George Hughes fishing just their second Crappie Masters Tournament who brought in 13.11 pounds on day two to seal their first victory.

st johns 1st trophies 2 An exciting start to the 2017 Crappie Masters Tournament Trail sponsored by The Renewable Fuels Association, American Ethanol, and Bass Pro Shops. No better place to get the year started than in Deland Florida on the historic St. John's River. Weather had been stable the week before the tournament, however tournament week brought multiple cold fronts, wind, and much cooler weather, which played a factor into how angler teams fished. Fifty boats from sixteen states were represented and at the end of the tournament, knowledge of the river and its tributaries played a huge roll in the final outcome. Multiple techniques were used to catch fish with unlikely techniques leading the way to the top of the leaderboard on this two day National Qualifying Tournament on the St. John's River sponsored by the West Volusia Tourism Advertising Authority.
