Seven 2 lb. crappie wins Pickwick Wilson Lakes
David Dean and Don Travis averaged a perfect 2 lbs per crappie to win first place and 2 4x4 Arctic Cat four-wheelers from Tracker Marine Group to take the Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters national qualifier held in Sheffield, Al, on lakes Pickwick and Wilson. Dean and Travis are members of Tracker Boats “Team Nitro” Pro Staff. A total weight of 14 lbs. for 7 fish was enough to over take second place Ronnie Capps and Steve Coleman who weighed in at 13.72 lbs.
Dean and Travis from Kentucky said they "fished brush piles and Porcupine fish attractors in 16 to 18 foot water. We fished bear creek with corks and poles, fishing straight down catching most fish off the bottom".
Capps and Coleman, of the B & M stated "We fished B and M poles, Eagle Claw hooks and a Minn Kota trolling motor to slow troll in 27 ft depth. We fished dry creeks and bear creek over natural cover and stumps". Their strategy netted them $3,000.00 for second place and the Minn Kota Bucks bonus.
Third place Earl Brink from Georgia took home $1500.00 on a total weight of 13.59 lbs.
Earl Brink fished the shallow waters 2-8 feet waters working the bear creek river channel flats. Brink caught his limit using B and M poles and Showdown Jigs.
Rodney Brown and Jim Freeman of Kentucky took 4th place, while Tim Ridley and Scott Watson from Tennessee took home 5th place. 12 States were represented by anglers with 87% of the competitors from out of the state of Alabama.
Rain on the last pre-fish day lifted to bring absolutely perfect weather for tournament day. With low winds, warm temperatures and the beautiful scenery of Pickwick and Wilson lakes, everyone enjoyed the tournament. A variety of prizes were awarded along with the always popular Bass Pro Gift Cards.
The city of Sheffield and Colbert County Tourism helped put on the Kid's Rodeo and had a strong showing of over 200 kids who fished for fun and prizes. Hot dogs and Pepsi were provided by the sponsors. The kids caught a variety of fish with the winner having 26 perch. Even a large catfish, a drum, and bass were landed by the kids. Poles and lure packs and caps were awarded to the group.
