Super anglers fight weather for Superman Championship

Bass Pro Crappie Masters Team Tournament Trail continued its tour across the Midwest with the Illinois State “Superman” Championship, in Metropolis, Ill. The tournament was held on the Ohio River, Smithland Pool and Olmstead. With high winds, rain, and tornado conditions, the Bass Pro sponsored event proved to be a test of the fittest among the anglers. Crappie Fever had never been more evident than with these teams that withstood the elements! With the weigh in being held at the feet of the giant Superman statue, a tremendous show of competition among the fishermen proved to be exciting for all! Marty Johnson and Terry Waugaman, of Murphysboro, TN, weighed in 9.76 lbs for seven crappie on day one of the event and the team was the proud winner of two Arctic Cat 4 x 4 four wheelers valued at $13,500! The team was using jigs and minnows over brush and tried to stay out of the sever wind. Second place went to 2005 National Champion, Tracy McIntosh, from Dyersburg, TN, who weighed in 9.74 lbs, just 2 oz. off of first place. His partner was unable to attend but Tracy was able to pick up the second place prize of $3000.00! Tracy was fishing with jigs only in shallow water in the creeks. Third place went to Bob and Nick Shafer with 9.39 lbs. They received a check for $1500.00. The fourth place team of Tom and JT Strain, Jr. netted $1000.00 with their catch of 8.81 and fifth place went to World Champions, Ronnie Capps and Steve Coleman, of Tiptonville, TN. They weighed in 8.65 lbs for $650.00. The remaining top ten received cash awards down through 10th and prizes were awarded down another 10 places. The fishermen received such items as HydoGlow lights, Perotti Rod Holders, Loki Nets, Keep Alive aerators, Fish Hedz face protectors, American Angler Electric Knives, a Knight Black Powder rifle, and many other products.

The final day two saw harsh and cold weather set in with higher winds than day one. Bob Shafer and Nick Shafer managed to stay on the fish with a winning weight of 8.58 for seven crappie and the title of “Illinois State Champions” with their additional earnings, this team ended the two days with 17.97 lbs. JT and Tom Strain placed second and Tracy McIntosh took 3rd. John Shantz and John Jr., the TurboSet team, took fourth, and Bill Braswell took fifth for the KEELSHIELD team! Both days paid out a total of $39,000.00 in cash and prizes and the top twenty received trophy plaques on day one and the top ten received them for day 2.
