On November 10th and 11th Proplite held their second annual youth deer hunt in Mississippi. The hunt was held on the farm of J.D. Huffman, owner of Proplite, LLC. There were four youths in attendance this year. The young hunters were Tanner McBroom, grandson of Pro Staff Member Richard Lindsey, from Louisiana along with Jake Tyrone, Brandon Hawkins and Dalton Cooper all from Mississippi.
The weekend began Friday night as the hunters arrived at the Huffman’s farm where they were greeted by J.D. Huffman, his grandson Scott Moore and Tim Huffman. After everyone was introduced they were treated to a delicious meal of bacon wrapped deer filets. After the meal all the youths played a friendly game of football outside the camp.

Saturday morning the hunters awoke to the smell of fried deer tenderloin, eggs and biscuits. After breakfast the young hunters were anxious to head out into the woods in hopes of harvesting a deer. The first hunter to return to camp was Jake with a very impressive 8 point. Jake was only on stand for 10 minutes before he downed the buck. The second hunter to return was Dalton with a nice mature doe. Tanner and Brandon both saw deer that morning but did not have the opportunity to shoot.
After the morning hunt and big lunch of homemade deer chili, the young hunters traded their guns for fishing poles to try their luck at one of the lakes on the farm. Once again, Jake was the first to score. He caught a 6lb bass on his fourth cast. After catching enough fish for that night’s dinner it was back to the woods for the evening hunt.
The evening hunt saw very little deer movement due to the warm temperatures so the hunters returned to camp for a meal of fresh fish and another football game.
Sunday morning the young men headed out early. All of them saw movement but none were able to bring in “the big one”. Dalton was able to take a 7 point that afternoon making him the only hunter to take two deer over the weekend.
Even though only some of the hunters were able to harvest deer everyone was able to walk away with a few good stories and maybe even a new friend or two. We came away with both and we look forward to the same next year.
On final note, last year’s youth hunt winner, Ryan Blackwell, sent us a picture of his first buck. Ryan was able to shoot his first deer, a nice mature doe, on the hunt he won with Proplite last year. Congratulations Ryan, on your first buck, it will be a memory you will cherish forever.
