Kentucky Barkley Lake in Paris, TN. hosted a major one day national qualifier May 17th, 2008. Sponsored by Bass Pro Shops, Tracker Marine, Toyota, Mercury Motors, Minn Kota and Humminbird, Paris Henry County Chamber and NW Tennessee Tourism, anglers had a chance to qualify for the National Championship held on Harris Chain of Lakes, Tavares, FL. in October. Partly cloudy skies, warm temperatures with some wind was the conditions for tournament day as the pre-fishing week had rain. Held in conjunction with Legends of the Outdoor’s founder Gary Mason’s media week the tournament brought 134 anglers from 10 states.
Tracy McIntosh and John Woods took first place with a total of 11.91 lbs. on seven fish. The team fished the Big Sandy area with one pole per hand, vertical jigging dropoffs. The team stated this helped them feel the bite better in the wind. They fished 15-20 foot waters with B & M custom poles, Southern Pro white/chartreuse jigs with pink heads. The team won big fish with a 2.58 lb. crappie and also won the Nitro bonus for having won a tournament fishing out of a Nitro boat. The team won the Crappie101.com bonus also. Total prizes for the team was over 8500.00.
Second place went to the team of Shawn Gore and Mike Smith with a total weight of 11.77. The team was spider rigging in 6-19 foot waters. They stated they had to move a lot to catch fish. The stated they used B&M poles, Southern Pro Jigs and Berkley nibbles. Second place earned the team 2500.00 dollars. The team also had big fish weighing in at 2.27 lbs.
Third place was taken by the team of Keith Cone and Harvey Freeman with a weight of 10.70 lb.s The team was jigging with single poles in 12-20 foot waters on the north end of the lake using 3/32 jigs and a variety of colors. Third place earned the team 1250.00 dollars.
The next tournament up on the trail is June 7th Divisional Tracker series at Lake Rathbun followed by June 14th Divisional Tracker series at Sardis Lake then a major one day national qualifier at Mark Twain Lake on June 28th.
