Grenada Monster Crappie - Blackley & VanCleave Win

Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters All American Trail was in Grenada, MS. on April 5th for a one day national qualifier. Sponsored by Bass Pro Shops, Tracker Marine, Toyota Tundra, Mercury Motors, Humminbird, Minn Kota and Grenada Tourism 148 anglers competed at the lake that will host the 2009 National Championship. A rainy friday pre fish day brought another couple feet of water to the lake which had been rising a few feet the previous day scattering crappie. Predictions of low weights didn't hold up as anglers were able to find monster crappie on the great crappie lake. Three teams weighed in a crappie of over 3 lbs.
First place went to a team that got their first win at a Crappie Masters tournament. The team of Tim Blackley and Jackie Vancleave fished 4-6 foot waters slow trolling using Wally Marshall poles with chartreuse tub jigs and weighed in seven fish for a total of 15.28 lbs. The team said they didn't fish vegetation and the bite would be very active and then very slow for a while. First place earned the team $5000.00 and a Bass Pro Shops VIP card for the year.
Second place went to husband-wife team of Jim and Barbara Reedy. They weighed in 14.62 lbs on seven fish. The team stated they fished north of the bridge in 7-8 foot waters fishing 2-3 foot deep trolling by pushing from the front of the boat. They used BnM poles with Roadrunner, Southern Pro grubs and Rocky Top blue & white jigs tipped with minnows. The team stated the bite seemed better in the morning. Second place earned the team a check worth $2500.00.
Team Toyota Tundra took third place honors and was one of the teams that weighed in a 3 lb. crappie. The Tundra team of Whitey Outlaw and Dean Sanders weighed in 14.55 lbs. on seven fish and won big fish honors with a 3.40 lb. slab making their 3rd time to win big fish at a Crappie Masters Grenada event. The team said they fished 3 to 8 foot waters and caught the big fish in 3 foot of water. They fished open waters & stumps. The team used BnM poles with Slowdown jigs and big minnows. The Tundra team won $1250.00 for third place and $518.000 for big fish.
2007 Grenada Champion Monty Blount and his partner Patrick Stone finished 4th. The Maganolia Crappie Club member lost his 2007 partner Billy Hall earlier in the year to an accident and was honored at the tournament Earl Brink and David Stancil finished 6th and once again won $1100.00 from the Nitro boat awards program by fishing from a Nitro boat and finishing in the top 10. Forty teams had over 10 lbs on seven fish. Kevin Jones Jr. and Mark Korn had a 3.06 lb crappie and Fred Fleming and Proplite’s JD Huffman had a a 3.01 lb crappie.
Next up on the tournament trail is a divisional tournament at Lake Eufaula, OK. on April 12th. Then the trail moves on to Lake of the Ozarks for a one day major national qualifier on April 19th followed by Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood MN. on April 26 for a major national qualifier and a divisional at Lake Shelbyville, Sullivan, IL. on April 26th also.
