Find the fish…Bert Bennett

The biggest mistake an average fisherman makes is to go to where he has caught fish before and then stay too long in the area if the fish aren't biting. Unless you know the spot is holding big fish right now, you don't need to stay where the fish aren't active.
Bert Bennett from Malden, Missouri, has fished the tournament circuits for years. His partner is often his son, Brandon, who started fishing the tournaments with him at age six or seven. They have had many top ten finishes and have qualified for several classics.
Bert says he starts his trip by getting a map, studying it at home and marking spots to try. "I try to find places on the map that I can relate to Wappapello (his home lake). Then I can just fish the new spot like I would fish my home lake."
"Once I get to the lake I go to the marked areas. If they're not productive then I'll just start looking. As a general rule, you can take a basic format of drops, points and flats and it'll work anywhere you go."
So the plan is relatively simple even for a totally new lake. Start by locating spots on the map. For confidence, try to find locations similar to ones you have fished on your home water. Find and fish theses spots. If they fail, logically start searching by working different structures at different depths until you find active fish.
