Stancil and Brink 2006 National Champions

Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters National Championship was held in Grenada, MS on Grenada Lake October 4-7th. Sponsored by Bass Pro Shops, Tracker Marine, Nitro Boats, Minn-Kota, Humminbird and the Grenada Tourism, the National Championship brought a lot of excitement as the top 10 teams from day one weighed in last with the leaders taking the hot seat. With over 250 teams competing, the competition was solid.

Earl Brink (GA) and David Stancil (AL) never even experienced the hot seat. Stancil and Brink brought in 12.92 lbs to lead the anglers after day one. This placed them as the last team to weigh in on the final day. They brought in 10.07 lbs to be crowned the Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters 2006 National Champions with a total weight of 22.99lbs. The champions were presented the prize of 2 fully rigged 898 Nitro Boats with a 225 OptiMax Mercury Motor, Minn-Kota trolling motor and electronics. Bass Pro Shops Wally Marshall (Mr. Crappie) presented the top awards.

It was second place team of Amy Christian and Bruce Christian (MO) that experienced the hot seat the most. The Christians were in fourth place after day one with 11.05 lbs. and weighed in 10.55 lbs on day 2. The couple sit in the hot seat for the next two weigh-ins till Brink and Stancil took the top prize as the last to weigh-in. The Christians took home $6,500.00 dollars cash and a Minn Kota trolling motor for the top male/female team.


Third place went to Stanley Steed and Joe Hayes from Georgia with a total weight of 21.37 lbs. Steed and Hayes were in 27th place after day one and brought in a weight of 11.92 lbs on day two to move up to third. The team collected $6,000.00 for third place.

Fourth place and $3,500.00 went to Freddie Gilliland (MO) and Ricky Fodge (MO) who weighed in 10.23 on day one and 10.44 on day two for a total of 20.67.

Fifth place went to Barbara and Gary Kendrick (AL), another male-female team with a strong showing. Day 1 the team weighed in 10.05 lbs, then turned another double figure in on day two of 10.58. The total of 20.63 won them $2,500.00.

Making the third male-female team in the top 10, Cheryl and Sam Sandage (MO) took 6th place and $1500.00 with a total of 20.39. Seventh place took a total weight of 20.15. Josh McMullin (MO) and Lance Sanders (MO), the seventh place prize was $1300.00.

Eighth place went to Danny Cannon (GA) and Billy Williams (GA) weighed in 19.84 to win $1200.00. Ninth place went to Bass Pro Shops Pro Staff Wally Marshall (TX) and Jeff Heuman (TX) who weighed in a total of 19.75 lbs and took home $1100.00.

The largest comeback was the team that took tenth place. Whitey Outlaw (GA) and Dean Sanders (GA) were in 90th place after day one with a first day weigh in of 7.27 lbs. But day two they weighed in the top weight of the day with a total of 12.41 lbs. Their total weight of 19.68 lbs was enough to move into the top 10 and take home $1,000.00.

The big fish of 2.75lbs brought team Chris Hemphill and Joe Lowery a prize of $1,700.00 as team took the prize sponsored by Budweiser (Delta Distributing Co.). The team also won a Proplite from the National Sponsor Proplite. Second big fish went to John Boise and Neol Fernandez who brought in a 2.71 crappie. A big fish of 2.86 was weighed in as the largest fish yet the team had not entered the big fish competition.

Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters paid down 30 spots to the anglers. Bass Pro Shops Wally Marshall’s $50,000.00 mystery weight contest was attempted by team Freddie Gilliland and Ricky Fodge. The team didn’t match the weight but did win $500.00 from Bass Pro Shops. Team John Schantz and John Schantz Jr. attempted to match the mystery weight sponsored by Turboset for $25,000.00. The team did not match the weight but won $1,000.00 cash. Kirk Auto Group of Grenada had a chance drawing, which gave an angler a 1 in 100 chance to win the truck. National Champions Brink and Stancil won the Keelshield $1,000.00 gator bonus.

Brad and Bryan from KMMO Crappie Masters Flag ship radio station and Jerry Adams from his PBS outdoors television show mc’d the event weigh-in. The Cody and Cody show, "On the Water In the Woods", on the Sportsman Channel filmed the event and participated in the media fish off.


The week was full of events as the Wednesday night banquet had entertainment by Warner Chappel singer-song writer, Briana Lawler. Events kicked off with Ms. Hospitality Grenada County, Lee Taylor singing the national Anthem and the Color Guard-ROTC of Grenada High School presenting arms. Grenada mayor Bill Collins welcomed Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters anglers to the city.

Thursday morning brought media and entertainment personalities on the lake for fishing. The media-celebrity event teamed pro anglers with personalities for a little competition. The competition was won by Briana Lawler who teamed up with Cheryl and Sam Sandage. Briana brought in a crappie weighing 2.44 lbs. Second place went to host radio Star 92.3’s Kevin Whitsell with a 2.42 crappie. Tina Lawler fished with Briana and weighed in a 2.36 crappie to place third. Briana and Tina took home matching Bass Pro Crappie Masters tables by sponsor Woodshed. Kevin got a new Porcupine Fish Attractor. The afternoon brought a boat parade through the city of Grenada. Boats decorated with the American Flag in honor of our Armed Forces was the theme.

The kids rodeo sponsored by Pizza Hut, Pro Lure Tackle and Shoney’s restaurant was held Saturday morning as over 80 kids with parents and grandparents fishing for prizes at the Grenada Lake Dam. Special appearance by the Shoney’s bear gave excitement to the kids along with a live remote from host radio station 92.3. The winner caught 25 large catfish.
